So Games Workshop is trying to claim copyright over the phrase Space Marine. Uh, guys? Sorry, but if you WERE going to call on that, it’s far too late for that.
Now Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy GW sometimes. Some of their modelers Turn out nice work, and about half the codex writers are pretty awesome (loving the 2 6th ed codexes), but the corporate level guys are always causing one problem or another. From claiming financial problems and raising prices (Despite skyrocketing profits in their annual financial reports) to incredibly self-centered lawsuits and destruction of fan creations, these are the guys that run one of the world’s largest tabletop wargaming companies.
A novel called “Spots the Space Marine” was pulled from shelves in december because GW claimed Copyright infringement. Their claim was on the words “Space Marine”. Looking at game history, I doubt this will go anywhere, since “Donkey Kong” got sued for infringing on “King Kong”, which was proven to be public domain. The novel was not published with any kinds of reference to GW property, simply the words “Space Marine.”
If a company like GW is complaining of financial problems, spending silly amounts of money on lawsuits that aren’t going to do anything for your company is certainly not the way to go, and it’s another case of Big Corp having a massive disconnect from the rest of the world.
